Description
A company of 400 Mexican soldiers led by Colonel José María Carrasco attack Geronimo's camp outside Janos (kas-Ki-Yeh in Apache) while men were in town trading. Carrasco justified the attack because of a claim that the Apaches had conducted a raid in Sonora, taking livestock and other plunder after badly defeating the Mexican militia. Geronimo's wife, children, and mother were killed. The loss of his family resulted in Geronimo's lifelong hatred of Mexicans.
