Quarries in Art

In addition to its fishing and granite industries, Cape Ann, especially Gloucester and Rockport, is best known for its history as a thriving art colony. Painters such as Edward Hopper, Winslow Homer, Milton Avery, Cecilia Beaux, Marsden Hartley, John Sloan and many others lived and worked on Cape Ann; some for short periods and others for many years.

Sculptors John Manship, Walker Hancock, Anna Hyatt Huntington and George Demetrios also thrived on Cape Ann. Demetrios' wife, Virginia Lee Burton was both a children's book author and illustrator as well as the founder of the Folly Cove Designers, a well-known group of women printmakers.

All of these artists, as well as many others, found inspiration in the light, landscape, and industries of Cape Ann.
